FAMILY PLANNING GENETICS
Family planning (or preconception) genetic consultations are offered to individuals or couples who are planning a pregnancy and want to know more about their risk of having a child with an inherited or genetic condition.
Reasons for consultation:
- You or your partner have a known or suspected genetic condition
- You or your partner have a family history of a known or suspected genetic condition
- You or your partner had a previous pregnancy complicated by a fetal anomaly or an abnormal genetic test result
- You or your partner have a personal or family history of unexplained recurrent miscarriages, infertility or stillbirths
- Couples who are closely related to each other and planning to have children
- Couples from certain ethnic backgrounds who are at higher risk for certain genetic conditions (e.g. Ashkenazi Jewish or Afrikaner)
- Couples who want to undertake or who have undertaken genetic carrier screening
- Individuals or couples who want to know as much as possible about their risks before planning a pregnancy.
What to expect:
During your family planning genetic consultation Dr Liani will address your concerns, explore your medical, pregnancy and family history, and take factors like your age and ancestry into account to determine and discuss your risk of having a child with an inherited or genetic condition. Dr Liani may recommend further genetic screening or genetic testing options suitable to you and your partner.
